What is Online flying?
Online flying makes use of flight
simulators multiplayer capability to link to a worldwide
network of computer servers. This means that you can
fly in the virtual skies and interact with 'real people'
from all over the world! What's more you can experience
real time, realistic air traffic control.
Before we jump in, a word or two
about the available Networks.
UK Direct is affiliated with three online Networks - Vatsim,
IVAO & Flight Project International (FPI). Each
Network has its pluses and its minuses.
With memberships running into the thousands both Vatsim
and IVAO are considered the established networks. Evenings
& weekends can get pretty busy and regular ATC can be
found at many of the worlds busier airports.
For a less frenetic and some say more laid back approach
(pun intended) there is the relatively new FPI Network.
Formed Feb 03 membership at the time of writing has
just passed 6000. Currently ATC is mainly confined to Europe
but expect more global coverage as the network grows.
What does it cost?
This is the good bit .... Nothing!
Ok, which Network shall I join?
Why not give all a try? A number
of UKD Pilots are active on all networks.
Before you don your virtual goggles with any network you
will need to register.
For Vatsim visit the main Vatsim site and apply
for your PID (Pilot Identification Number) This sometimes
can take a few days to arrive.
The FPI network will supply you with a VID (Virtual Identification
Number) which will arrive within a few minutes. Follow the
'beginners
start here' link.
IVAO also supply you with your VID via email. 'Normally'
a quick process.
I have my ID, what next?
VATSIM:
The Vatsim network requires the installation of Squawkbox
and its required components. UKD recommend you join
the Vatsim
Pilot Resource Centre where full install instructions
as well as a comprehensive training program can be found.
FPI:
The FPI network uses a single application (ATOC) which includes
the voice client ( talking is far easier than typing whilst
flying ;-) ) Multiplayer packs enabling you to see
other online aircraft are available. The Pilots Guide
can also be found from the beginners
link.
IVAO:
Flying on the IVAO Network is virtually identical to flying
on Vatsim. The only operational differences being the use
of TeamSpeak, as opposed to Advanced Voice Client, for the
use of voice communications. FS9SB2MP, rather than SBRelay,
is used as the bridge between the multiplay session and
Squawkbox.
If you have any problems installing
either networks software, or getting online then please
post a 'HELP!' message in the Online section of the UKD
Forums.
