Flight Planning

Updated on 22/11/02

What`s this, then?

I have given up on the idea of linking direct to charts (like I tried on the old site). It`s not good "netiquette", and I don`t like it when peeps link direct to zip files and other stuff on this site, so I`ll try to practise what I preach!
Therefore, I`m going to list the links to sites which offer all the goodies you might want to check out before setting off on a UKD flight, either online or offline.
There`s a few scripts showing data from the VATSIM and IVAO servers too.

ONLINE STATUS
REAL-WORLD SITES

Official sites for Real-World operations.
Most contain up to date NOTAM and any special procedures for flights in that area.
This section has sites with free charts

UK Aeronautical Information Service, Contains charts for UK airfields, including SID, STAR, IAP, RAMP, TAXI and they are all free!! There`s not much you can get for free these days, so a big hug to our very own CAA for this site. Gawd bless 'em!
You now need to register to access the charts, maybe a precursor to having to cough up but for now, make the most of it!
Portugal. Free charts for the major airports. Good work by Britain`s oldest allies!
Spain. Get the gen before you jet off to the sun! There are charts, but they are always unavailable when I look...
Charts section (in English) is HERE
Denmark. This site is far, far easier to navigate after you click on the button marked "ENGLISH".
www.pakistaniaviation.com Interesting site with good info. on the Pakistan Aviation scene. Well, it would be, wouldn`t it? Click on AIP for some Jepp scans.
www.pakaviation.com Very smart and useful site with even more Pakistsan related information. Lots of links, charts and flightsim articles.
Leeds/Bradford Int. Airport Useful information for LBA pilots and PAX, with charts section HERE.
National Imagery Mapping Agency Use your noggin and you can click through to all the charts and NOTAM for most of the planet. For the lost and befuddled, the charts section is close to HERE.

No free charts appear to be available at these (tight@sses!)

All the bumpf you need to fly to Eire! I think you have to register to get it though...
Bah! Typical French, an arty-farty ASP site which looks great but apart from the NOTAM (for up-to-date news on ATC strikes ) only serves as a shopping cart for over-priced charts.
Our Belgian chums have links and info. for most of Europe. Some of the links HERE contain charts.
CAA-RS.SI No charts, but lots of information on Swedish airports.

VIRTUAL SITES

These contain charts, procedures and other useful information for online and offline operations.

NAVDATA.AT Oodles of information on this site. Got links to more charts than I have, so no point in me having them... FSNav4 cycles are here too!
Belgium and Luxembourg information, with loads of charts (including Enroute!). Nice site.
Virtual ATC ops site for ELLX. Mainly IVAO and the charts links are the ones on the BELUX site.
DUTCH VACC Dutch VACC site, with huge amounts of charts for Schipol and all the smaller airports too.
FIRWIEN.AT Superb site by the Virtual Vienna FIR. Get yer charts BEFORE you hit the mountains!
VACC-SAG.ORG Swiss, Austrian and German VACC site. Lots of useful content, as you would expect!
Scroll down a bit to find a great set of charts for Norway.
VACC-SWE Swedish VACC site, with charts, routes and procedures all in a great php site!
VACC-FIN Finnish VACC site, charts and lots of info.
VACC-HUN Hungarian VACC site, getting up to speed and charts already online.
VACC-CRO Croatian VACC site, friendly peeps and plenty of charts to get your teeth into.
HVACC Greek VACC site, and it`s one of the best. Loads of charts, tons of info. Don`t download any military information, though...
TRVACC.ORG Turkish VACC site, very swish with ASP and stuff. Charts section is HERE.
PORTUGAL-VACC Portugese VACC site, enroute, SID, STAR charts and so on with other useful information.
VATSIM Canada Toronto FIR. Lots of good stuff.
VATSIM Canada Winnipeg FIR. Same as above.
ATLANTA ARTCC Virtual Atlanta ARTCC. Good site that covers Charlotte and Washington too.
BOSTON ARTCC Virtual Boston ARTCC. Nice site with charts, procedures and plenty of other links.
LOS ANGELES ARTCC Virtual Los Angeles ARTCC. Lots of .gif charts, and a growing route plan database.
OAKLAND ARTCC Virtual Oakland ARTCC. Not checked, but I`d guess it`s full of good stuff.
ALASKA VACC Pop-ups ahoy! at the Alaska VACC site (it`s on Tripod). Under them there are loads of charts for the chilly-willy state.
HNL ARTCC Warm up after your trip to Alaska by checking this site for VATSIM Hawaii.
VATCAR VATSIM Caribbean ATC main site. Plenty of information and lots of links to charts.
Virtual Caribbean ATC site, some useful info. A selection of Caribbean charts for those CDA jaunts is HERE.
Panama. With charts for the main airports.
Those Argentine chaps use their experience at cramming corned beef into tins to cram loads of charts onto this site. Can`t make out much of the text though.
Unless you are some kind of codebreaker or sumfink, you would be advised to click on the "English" button. Then you`ll be able to find lots of useful Korean charts. Good for avoiding missiles...
dangerous-airports.com Nuff said. Combine this site with the awful weather site below and have a party! Check out some of Andrew Herd`s articles on Flightsim.com too.

Hmmmm. Short on charts but still useful.

Still no sign of the "issues" with SAS being sorted, but the Manuals for helping to decipher the charts are still here. Worth downloading and reading if you are learning the Art of Chart.
Virtual Ops at VATSIM EGBB. Some procedure and SID/STAR/APP information and links to the CAA charts.
Not been updated since 1999, but there`s some stuff about NATS tracks and Virtual Gander Oceanic information.
A sort of resource centre (or center) for charts and information before you fly on VATSIM. Chart links provided to the "echoplate" site, but that only covers the USA.
FSDISPATCH.COM No charts but does contain a growing collection of flight plans and routings. I had to use the link to the "old" site, but that could just be me.

WEATHER

You can use Servinfo to find up to date good/dodgy weather. These sites have their uses too.

AWFULWEATHER.COM Woohoo! Looking for a tricky crosswind? Fancy a bit of windshear? Want to land in a blizzard with winds 40kts gusting 75? This would be the place to look, then!
AVIATION DIGITAL DATA SERVICE Weather service for North America. Maps and enroute weather reports.

Don`t fall over in shock... Here`s the weather thingy I promised.

See what you think of this.

TIME ZONES

Sorting out UK Local from GMT, Zulu, UTC, CET, EST and all the daylight saving adjustments can be tricky. Here`s a way to work it out.

TIMEANDDATE.COM Find the local times for your UTC/ZULU/GMT departure.

ROUTE INFORMATION

The NATS site has now stopped direct links to their files (no surprise, really).
I`ll put the path to the file when I`ve worked it out, but in the meantime you`ll have to find it for yourself.
The .pdf is nearly 2Mb, and almost 300 pages, so download first then open and read. Think about the rain forests before printing it all out...
